The Making of Gaara's Gourd by ThundersSilence The Making of Gaara's Gourd by ThundersSilence
I have been asked several times how I did my gourd so I finally got round to making this "making-of". i'm not calling it tutorial (even though i put it into that category for the sake of... well, categorization) because it really isn't. i did fotos when i made it simply to see how i did it in the end, because i don't really remember much of the process. things like that just.. happen.
anyways, if this helps people in any way, or gives them new ideas in how to make their own props, then that's good. otherwise, don't take this as a guide.. it really isn't

I don't remember and don't have the gourd anymore. anyway, it depends on your own height how big the gourd needs to be if you want to cosplay gaara. my gourd might be too big or too small :)

the carrying mechanism itself wasn't that much of a problem. it was relatively easy to take off/put on again, the weight was the worst problem... but there's much to improve in this! i wish you success with yours! :)

I've never seen paper mache done like that before. I shall give it a try! Sounds like a much better alternative to what I had done to 'smooth things out'... the only cosplay I did was Pyramid head from silent hill, and I thought that a thin layer of sheet rock (the stuff they put on walls) wouldnt add too much wieght to the helmet I was making. I was wrong! I had to make a complex support system so that the weight of it wouldnt hurt my head, and so that the front end wouldnt keep tipping down! lol. Live and learn I guess!

I'm faving this for future refernce, for sure :)

sheet rock??!!! man, you must have a really strong neck!! but this gourd actually is too heavy as well. it weighs about 6-7 kilos because on top of the paper maché i still put some kind of stuff that is usually put in between tiles for example in a bathroom. it's basically "rock" when it's dry so after all it probably wasn't the best choice, either. it looks great though, so i don't regret using it, though i probably won't use it again for a prop ;)

This is a very helpful piece ~ I was wondering how to do the jug that Auron from FFX carries, and this may be just the thing to show the hubby to get him to start on it! Thank you very much for this, it's a great kinda "try this out" tutorial :D Thank you for making it!
